The Story Behind Win or Lose
In development for several years, Win or Lose follows a middle school softball team in the United States as they prepare for a pivotal championship game. The series explores the mounting pressure and anxieties experienced by the players and their coach, bringing these emotions to life in unique and creative ways.
Created by Carrie Hobson (Toy Story of Terror!) and Michael Yates (Toy Story 4), the series features Will Forte lending his voice to Coach Dan, the team’s dedicated and sometimes overzealous mentor.

A Controversial Journey to Release
Despite its lighthearted premise, Win or Lose has faced its share of controversy. Reports emerged that Disney significantly reduced or removed a storyline involving a transgender character, citing parental concerns.
"When it comes to animated content for younger audiences, we recognize that many parents prefer to address certain topics with their children on their own terms and at a time they deem appropriate." Disney stated.
The decision reportedly left Pixar employees distraught, with some allegedly moved to tears upon learning of the directive. See the reaction reports by clicking here.
While Pixar’s storytelling brilliance has been featured in spin-off series like Monsters at Work (also available on Disney+), Win or Lose is distinct as it’s fully animated by Pixar itself. This marks the studio’s first original series, setting it apart from previous Disney Animation-produced adaptations.
Originally scheduled for a December 6, 2024, debut, Win or Lose swapped release dates with Dream Productions, a spin-off of Inside Out 2 that focuses on the “film studio” responsible for staging Riley’s dreams. This change moved Win or Lose to February 19, 2025, giving fans more time to anticipate Pixar’s innovative foray into serialized storytelling.
