Win or Lose: Pixar Employees React to Disney’s Decision to Cut Transgender Plotline

Pixar’s upcoming Disney+ series, Win or Lose, has sparked controversy following Disney’s decision to remove a storyline about gender transition. According to reports, the move has deeply affected Pixar employees, with many expressing their disappointment and sadness over the decision.

The Emotional Impact on Pixar’s Team

The information, originally reported by The Hollywood Reporter, highlights the profound impact this decision has had on Pixar staff. One animator shared,

The episode, in its final form, was so beautiful and beautifully illustrated by real experiences of being transgender. It could have saved lives by showing those who feel lonely and unloved that there are people out there who understand them.

Sarah Ligatich, a trans assistant director and consultant for the affected episode, also voiced her frustration. She described the emotional toll of the decision, stating,

I can’t tell you how much I cried yesterday thinking about the conversation that David [Stewart, executive producer] had to have with Chanel [Stewart, the voice actor for the reworked cisgender character].

Ligatich added,

Not only are you asking someone to portray someone they’re not, but you’re involving them in a conversation far beyond them. This story had been ready for two years; they could have released it during Joe Biden’s presidency, but they chose not to.

Disney’s Stance

In response to the backlash, a Disney spokesperson defended the decision, saying,

When it comes to animated content for a younger audience, we recognize that many parents prefer to address certain topics with their children on their own terms and at a time they deem appropriate.

This statement has done little to quell the disappointment among Pixar employees and fans who were eager to see more inclusive representation in the series.

What Is Win or Lose About and the release date?

For many, the decision to cut the storyline feels like a missed chance for Pixar and Disney to promote inclusivity and address important themes for younger audiences. The emotional reactions from the creative team emphasize just how much this story meant to those involved in its development.

While Win or Lose remains one of Pixar’s most anticipated projects, this controversy has added a layer of complexity to its release. Fans and industry observers alike will be watching closely to see how the series performs and whether it manages to live up to the high expectations set by Pixar’s legacy of groundbreaking storytelling.
